These will take place on October 16, 17, and 18 at the National Park House in Boí. Researchers from CEAB-CSIC will share the scientific knowledge gained from research projects carried out in the area, such as the LIFE RESQUE ALPYR, AEROSMIC, IWAS, FLORAQUA, and various studies conducted using the Pyrenean Limnological Observatory.

At this 13th Research Conference on the Aigüestortes and Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, research projects that shed new light on research lines started years ago will be presented, helping to understand the complexity of a space like the National Park. Many of these projects focus on studying and mitigating the effects of climate change on ecosystems, promoting the conservation and restoration of this valuable space—a field in which CEAB-CSIC has extensive experience.

The talks from more than thirty speakers will be complemented by field trips to the Park, where some of the ongoing interventions will be shown and explained.

Promoting collaboration between different sectors to conserve the Pyrenean ecosystems

The main goal of the event is to share the knowledge obtained by researchers from research centers and universities working in the area, as well as to foster collaboration between these institutions, managers, and the public to conserve, and in some cases, restore these valuable ecosystems.

The scientific evidence gathered by the team of the LIFE RESQUE ALPYR project, coordinated by CEAB-CSIC, plays a key role. On the 16th, starting at 11 a.m., researcher Teresa Buchaca will talk about the impact of fish removal on the biomass and composition of phytoplankton in five ponds in the Park. Following that, Víctor Osorio will give a presentation on the recovery of macroinvertebrates after the eradication of introduced fish. The third talk related to the project will take place on October 17 at 4 p.m., where Laia Nogué will explain the impact of hydraulic regulation on the populations of musk turtles in the Catalan Pyrenees. The final presentation will be given by Maria Àngels Puig on October 18, discussing the importance of hidden biodiversity in the rivers of the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park.

Other researchers from CEAB-CSIC taking part include: Emili O. Casamayor, who will talk about the effects of global change on the dispersion of microorganisms through the atmosphere (AEROSMIC project); Stephanie N. Merbt, with a presentation on the effects of wastewater on alpine rivers and mitigation strategies (IWAS project); Esperanza Gacia, discussing the evolution of macrophytes in the Park’s ponds and their relationship with global change (FLORAQUA); and Lluís Camarero, who will share knowledge about the importance of groundwater in surface runoff in the Park (studies carried out using the Pyrenean Limnological Observatory).

The event is open to anyone interested, subject to capacity. More information is available at this link.
