The application period is now open for the Mosquito Alert educational project for the 2024/25 school year. This initiative is aimed at both elementary schools (for 5th and 6th grade) and high schools (from 1st year of secondary education to high school diploma) across Spain.

Mosquito Alert, the citizen science platform that tracks invasive mosquito species that transmit diseases, has once again opened the call for teachers and educational centers interested in participating in its educational program.

Those interested only need to fill this form (before the end of September). By doing so, they commit to actively participating in the planned activities. The program is fully funded, so no financial contribution is required from the schools.

The Mosquito Alert educational program consists of three formats depending on the age group of the students:

  • Elementary Education: 5th and 6th grade
  • Secondary Education: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year of secondary education
  • Secondary Education: 4th year of secondary education and high school diploma

In all formats, the project consists of an introduction phase, a learning phase, a development phase, and a conclusion phase. Each phase includes several sessions that are conducted at the school, following the Project-Based Learning and Learning by Doing approaches. At the beginning of the project, a teacher training course will be provided, where all the tools and instructions needed to carry out the project will be presented. What changes for each age group are the specific content and assignments, as well as the educational objectives to be achieved.

Mosquito Alert is a cooperative, non-profit citizen science initiative coordinated by various public research centers: CREAF (Center for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications), Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), ICREA (Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies), and CEAB-CSIC (Blanes Advanced Studies Center). Its goal is to study, monitor, and combat the spread of invasive mosquitoes capable of transmitting global diseases like dengue, Zika, or West Nile fever. The tiger mosquito and the yellow fever mosquito are some of the invasive species monitored by Mosquito Alert.

The Mosquito Alert educational project was launched in 2017. It is supported and co-funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) and is developed by the Environmental Association Xatrac, in collaboration with the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
